HydroSurv’s Innovative Approach to Water Quality Monitoring: Insights from Westminster & Looking Forward to MATS
HydroSurv CEO David Hull recently presented at Westminster for the Energy, Environment & Transport Forum policy conference, addressing the critical issue of water pollution in England.
The event, chaired by Barry Gardiner MP and Jess Brown-Fuller MP, brought together key stakeholders from government, regulatory bodies, and the private sector to discuss strategies for combating water pollution across the country.
“Smart Ports, Clean Waters” Project
During his address, David highlighted HydroSurv’s “Smart Ports, Clean Waters” project, an Innovate UK-funded initiative currently underway. This project aims to transform water quality monitoring in key ports across South West England.
For details about this innovative project, please see our previous press release.
Addressing Emerging Concerns: PFAS
A significant focus of the forum was the concerning presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in UK rivers. Recent investigations have highlighted areas like the River Dart, where HydroSurv is surveying, as a notably affected waterway. The persistence of these “forever chemicals” in the environment underscores the urgent need for advanced monitoring and mitigation strategies.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Our Impact
As we move forward, it’s clear that innovation will play a crucial role in combating water pollution. HydroSurv is committed to:
- Developing our catchment-by-catchment monitoring approach
- Fostering partnerships with key stakeholders to look for emerging threats like PFAS
By combining cutting-edge technology with a localised approach, we aim to contribute to the broader effort of achieving cleaner, safer waters for all.
A Collaborative Path Forward
The Westminster Forum reinforced the importance of collaboration between technology providers like HydroSurv, regulatory bodies, and environmental organisations.
Our efforts, alongside those of our partners and peers, serve as part of a larger model for how targeted, high-tech monitoring can inform and support environmental protection efforts.
MATS 2024
David will be speaking about HydroSurv’s innovative approach at the Marine Autonomy and Technology Showcase at the National Oceanography Centre this week. Please come along to get the latest updates on our findings from the ‘Smart Ports Clean Waters’ project.
