HydroSurv’s Smart Ports, Clean Waters Project Featured in ECO Magazine’s Winter 2025 Edition

Excited to share that HydroSurv’s Smart Ports, Clean Waters project has been featured in the Winter 2025 edition of Environment, Coastal & Offshore (ECO) Magazine.

Authored by David Hull, Founder & CEO of HydroSurv, the article explores how uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) can transform water quality monitoring across UK estuaries and harbours. It highlights insights from a year-long pilot in Falmouth, Plymouth and Dartmouth, where HydroSurv’s battery-electric USVs, equipped with advanced Chelsea Technologies fluorometer payloads, collected weekly data along repeated geospatial track lines – a new approach to identifying and mapping transient pollution events.

Delivered under Innovate UK’s Marine & Maritime Launchpad programme, the project brought together a collaborative team led by MSeis, with participation from Falmouth Harbour, Cornwall, Cattewater Harbour Commissioners, and Dart Harbour. Together, the partners explored how zero-emission USV operations and high-frequency data collection can enable more responsive and spatially aware water-quality assessment in dynamic coastal environments.

The feature showcases how the combination of autonomous technology, fluorescence-based sensing, and data visualisation is helping to advance environmental monitoring – supporting cleaner, more sustainable coastal and estuarine ecosystems.
